Who are the Hansons?
We grew up in upstate New York and began attending Gospel Community Church as new Christians. We consider Gospel our first home church and cherish the relationships we have with so many who are like family to us there.
After being called to missions nearly 25 years ago, we joined Youth With a Mission and began a season of learning, ministering, and eventually teaching and leading Discipleship Training Schools to several nations including Cambodia. After 8 years with YWAM we stepped into a new season, responding to a calling God placed on our hearts to start a new ministry in Cambodia, In His Steps International.
We are licensed pastors and love ministering to groups and individuals through discipleship training, teaching, and counseling. In addition to our work in Cambodia, we speak and minister at churches, YWAM bases, retreats, and seminars throughout the USA and Asia.
What is In His Steps International?
In His Steps International is based out of Colorado Springs CO, USA and is registered as a 501©3 non-profit. In His Steps is passionate about transforming lives spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, economically and socially. With Jesus as our example, our vision is to see people set free from affliction, deprivation and oppression. We accomplish these goals through a multi-faceted, holistic approach, addressing both practical and spiritual needs as we share God’s love with people young and old.
Currently, IHSI’s main missions work is in Cambodia, but we also believe God has called us to implement our ministry model in other nations in the area! IHSI submits to local and international law, and all aspects of the ministry are under the oversight of the international board with a national board for day-to-day governance. Our great team of staff and volunteers from Cambodia and other nations are not only co-laborers in ministry but also a family of brothers and sisters in Christ.
IHSI ministry is always growing, but our main programs in Cambodia are:
Loaves and Fish (L&F)
Our Loaves and Fish program sponsors orphans, widows, and the desperately poor on a case-by-case basis, providing food, vitamins, hygiene supplies, clothing, medical care, education, and spiritual care. Each sponsored individual lives within a family unit in the community, and many of the children who were once ostracized and afraid have now become church volunteers and youth leaders in our community!
Father’s House (FH)
Father’s House, a facility for orphaned, at-risk, and trafficking children, is not simply an orphanage, but a home for children without a family. Though each child comes from different backgrounds, they all need the stability, provision, discipline and love that only a family can provide! As they heal and mature, many are thriving in school and have become active in church ministries; leading worship, visiting the sick, and helping with Sunday School and children’s programs.
Sak Saum (SS)
Sak Saum, the Khmer word for “dignity”, is a program designed to help at-risk and trafficked women and young men through counseling, education, and job skills training. Individuals in our program receive counseling, are trained in income-generating skills, receive life-skills mentoring, and take part in daily devotional times. We also provide housing for those without a safe place to stay and childcare for women with young children.
Our newest Sak Saum program is Brother’s House, a metalworking vocational center for young men who have been trafficked or who come from backgrounds of addiction or incarceration. All Sak Saum programs promote community development through job creation and fair-trade practices.
Gospel Community Church in Saang (GCCS)
In the summer of 2009 we planted a church in Saang, and in 2014 we celebrated GCCS’s 5-year anniversary! Staff from our national leadership team pastor the growing congregation, with the Hansons serving as apostolic advisors. In addition to weekly services, GCCS has women’s and men’s groups, youth discipleship, ecumenical events, children’s ministry, Sunday School, nursery, counseling, benevolent programs, and more.
GCCS also provides pastoral training opportunities, Biblical counsel, benevolent project sponsorship, youth sports teams, and team outreaches to children, with the goal of strengthening unity and building partnerships to increase the efficacy of the Body of Christ as a whole.
Kairos Training Center (KTC)
The Kairos Training Center is a venue designed to accommodate the ongoing growth of programs at our ministry campus, “The Center”. It provides a community-friendly space where discipleship, education, and fellowship can all take place, as well as a daycare space for children of women in Sak Saum and an outdoor playground area for local children.
In addition to being the hub for all Gospel Community Church programs, the KTC offers English classes, computer classes, educational events, youth and children’s programs, pastoral care, discipleship training, leadership development, cultural arts training, a children’s reading room, a gathering space for community events, and more.
Teams, Visitors, and Volunteers
IHSI loves having teams, visitors, and volunteers come to serve Cambodia and encourage the local Body of Christ. Because of our roots there, we have a special place in our hearts for teams from Gospel!
